Fine Art

Cal Stretar is a sculptor from Northeast Ohio. He spent his collage years studying Art History at The Ohio State University. Post college he spent six years with the Cleveland Museum of Art working in production in their Design and Architecture Department. Over the past couple years, Cal has begun cultivating a career back in studio art, specifically, in sculpture. He works primarily with unbaked, air dry clay, but also adds other unique, mixed media textures such as wood, brush bristles, and leather.

Cal is inspired by God’s creation of the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it. He wants to glorify the Greatest Artist by reflecting His creation. Most of Cal’s pieces feature portraits of animals, many of which are from the Bovidae family because of the challenge of capturing their magnificent, wild horns. He likes to reference photographs of the various subjects he’ll sculpt, along with many eras and styles of sculptural art including Neolithic, Archaic, Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, Romantic, and Impressionist movements. A majority of his pieces are painted painted with an oil, alkyd paint which gives a muted tone and various burnished lusters. Cal pulls his color and textural palettes from a variety of cultures including African, Japanese, European, and North American.
